About North Portugal - Portugal

Porto, the beautiful cities of Braga, Bragança and Guimarães, the verdant Minho, the wonderful Douro and the fascinating region of Trás-os-Montes. Here are some of the postcards of northern Portugal, the birthplace of the Nation. And here are the Peneda-Gerês National Park, the rock engravings of Foz Côa and the vineyards from which the grapes are extracted for the internationally well known Port wine.
Northern Portugal is the center for the thriving textile, furniture and footwear industries. It is a land of people of creased character and easy smile and traditions that time won’t erase. It is the land of “filigrees” and “masks” that in Carnival take over the streets of Podence. It is the region of the imposing granite mountains and hills and the magnificent Alto Douro vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From one end to the other of this rich and immense territory, vineyards, farms, homes and plots are left that are at the mercy of those who look for a vacation home, a permanent place to live or to retire and also to invest in a vineyard and the wine business in the Douro.

Local Flavours / Gastronomy

In the north of Portugal the food is great, or rather; the food is more than great, it is excellent! The specialties vary from region to region and among them are the well known “francesinha” in Porto, the “rojões” in the Minho, the “wild rabbit rice” in the Douro, the “miranda post” in Trás-os-Montes and so on. To accompany all these incredible gastronomic specialities, nothing beats a good vinho verde from the Minho or a “nectar” born and cultivated in the Douro that is not only producer of Port wine but also for sophisticated whites, reds and rosés.

Welcome to the culinary paradise of North Portugal, where flavors come alive and tantalize your taste buds. Get ready to embark on a gastronomic journey through this enchanting region, known for its rich culinary heritage and mouthwatering dishes.

The gastronomy of North Portugal is a celebration of tradition, authenticity, and local produce. Prepare to be delighted by the region’s signature dishes, each one a masterpiece of flavors. From hearty stews to succulent meats and fresh seafood, every bite tells a story of centuries-old recipes passed down through generations.

One of the highlights of North Portuguese cuisine is its exceptional seafood offerings. The region’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean blesses it with an abundance of fresh fish and shellfish. Indulge in the freshest grilled sardines, marinated in olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt, or savor the delicate flavors of grilled octopus, tender and full of the sea’s essence. Don’t miss the opportunity to try the iconic bacalhau (salted codfish), prepared in a myriad of delicious ways that showcase the versatility of this beloved ingredient.

Venture into the picturesque countryside, and you’ll discover the hearty and rustic dishes that define the region. Taste the famous cozido à portuguesa, a flavorful meat and vegetable stew slow-cooked to perfection. The traditional tripas à moda do Porto, made with tripe and white beans, is a true delicacy that reflects the region’s historical roots. And let’s not forget about the francesinha, a mouthwatering sandwich layered with cured meats, melted cheese, and smothered in a rich sauce, a true indulgence for meat lovers.

North Portugal is also a land of rich flavors and textures when it comes to cheeses and cured meats. Savor the pungent and intense flavors of the Serra da Estrela cheese. Pair this delectable cheese with the region’s outstanding cured meats, such as the mouthwatering presunto (cured ham) and the flavorful alheira (smoked sausage), for a true gastronomic delight.

As you explore the local markets and family-run taverns, you’ll be captivated by the array of fresh produce that graces the region. From succulent tomatoes bursting with flavor to crisp greens and aromatic herbs, the ingredients are as vibrant as the landscapes that surround them. Taste the sweetness of the region’s apples and pears, and indulge in the juicy grapes and plums that showcase the bountiful harvests of North Portugal.

To complete your culinary journey, treat yourself to the region’s irresistible pastries and desserts. Sink your teeth into the delicate pastéis de nata, custard tarts with a perfectly caramelized crust that will transport you to dessert heaven. Don’t miss the opportunity to try the heavenly toucinho do céu, an almond and egg yolk cake that melts in your mouth, or the delectable bola de berlim, a fluffy doughnut filled with creamy custard.

Beaches / Sports

The north of Portugal is not very known for the beaches but believe me, they have beautiful ones! Among the most beautiful and popular are the beaches of Viana do Castelo and Melides. Inland the sea baths give way to the river baths and there are so much river beaches that we find in Lima, Tâmega and other rivers of Minho and Trás-os-Montes. Another postcard of the north of Portugal is the National Park of Peneda-Gerês where besides the splendid landscape there are adventures to test the brave vein of each one.
